About Us

Dakota Battery & Electric
was est. in the 1950's in Rapid City SD. It is currently a family owned business run by a father/son team, Tom & Casey Barrett. They employ 9 full time employees. Tom has been in the rebuilding business since the early part of the 70's and Casey started his rebuilding career during high school in 1996. In the beginning, the business rebuilt batteries, and fixed starters and generators. Over the years the business moved several times but has been in this location since 1995.

Dakota Battery & Electric no longer rebuild batteries, but they continue to rebuild starters, generators, alternators, and DC motors. They stock a complete line of new batteries from several manufacturers such as Exide, Trojan, Deka / East Penn and Power Sonic. Other brands are also available.

Tom, Casey and crew are constantly going to training seminars and conventions to stay current with new technology. They take pride in staying up on what is new. Because of this distinct advantage, other shops, parts stores and dealerships seek their advice in solving electrical problems. Tom & Casey have also established technical training classes for shops, truck & equipment dealers, and repair facilities.

They have the most up to date test equipment in their region. They can test those old generators as well as the new computer controlled alternators, starters and motors.

Tom & Casey each serve on the National Advisory Board of Directors for the Electrical Rebuilders Association. Tom had served as the Membership Director for the ERA. This Association is dedicated to educating rebuilders on new products and technical information.

Because Dakota Battery & Electric is a family run business, they give their customers personal attention. Customers service and satisfaction is their priority. Customers are treated with respect, not just during the sale, but after the sale as well. Dakota Battery & Electric is there to solve your electrical problems believing that it is the service after that sale that counts.

Currently they have a 300-mile trade area, but they have received units for repair from across the country. You will find that they will go the extra mile to get the job done.
